Tillandsia Brachycaulos

Family

Bromeliaceae

Origin

Central America and Mexico

Description

Featuring wide, thick, strong leaves that are an incredible and vibrant green, the Tillandsia Brachycaulos resembles the top to a pineapple! It will produce many layers of strong leaves that transitions as it grows. It will also develop luscious red and pink hues when the plant blooms.

The flowers themselves are a beautiful purple with slight yellow coloring. It is also one of the few varieties of Air Plants that can manage the strong rays of the sun, and develop new colors when exposed to direct, natural light.

In its native habitat, this species is pollinated by hummingbirds. Locally, it is visited by sunbirds.

Environment

It likes warmer, humid conditions but will do just fine in a dryer environment with regular misting. Do not allow water to collect in the leaf bases as this will cause the plants to rot. Soak the plant for around 30 min in water every week .

Good ventilation is a must. Feed with dilute liquid fertilizer fortnightly.

Landscape Uses

Ornamental plants which are great for attracting birds.
