Description

The clove tree is an evergreen that grows up to 8–12 metres tall, with large leaves and crimson flowers grouped in terminal clusters. The clove tree trunk is known for its smooth bark and either green or grayish-yellow aromatic foliage.

The flower buds initially have a pale hue, gradually turn green, then transition to a bright red when ready for harvest. Cloves are harvested at 1.5–2 centimetres  long, and consist of a long calyx that terminates in four spreading sepals, and four unopened petals that form a small central ball.

Environment

Clove trees grow in wet, tropical regions. They require consistent temperatures of 21-30 C that do not dip below 10 C. Clove trees can grow best in full sun to part shade. Companion trees such as jacaranda and mango or Banana can provide them with some shade which is needed in initial growth period.

Clove trees prefer to grow in a rich soil that has good drainage, is loamy, and is chock-full of organic matter.

These plants require continuous water. Drip irrigation system can bring the best results, particularly during the summer months when the plants may require additional watering. Just be sure that the soil doesn't become waterlogged or too soggy, as these conditions can lead to root rot. The clove tree will require the most frequent watering in its first three to four years of growth.

Apply an organic fertilizer, such as compost, bone meal, or fish meal, at the beginning of any rainy season. Once the plant starts to grow, switch to using a superphosphate MOP (muriate of potash) or potassium sulfate plant food. Increase the amount of fertilizer to double when it’s used to feed a clove tree that’s more than 15 years of age. Until the harsh summer ends, apply the fertilizer in split doses by pouring it into trenches that you’ve dug outside of the plant.

Clove plants can be grown in containers, though they will not grow as tall as when planted outdoors. Containers should be at least 18 inches in diameter and have a proper drainage system. Light watering and frequent misting are recommended.
