Monstrose Apple Cactus

Family

Cactacaea

Native

South Texas

Description

Cereus peruvianus  Monstrosus is an incredibly unique specimen that grows taller than most any other succulent in a columnar form.

This cactus features irregularly ribbed gray-green stems that grow up to 15 feet tall.  As Monstrosus grows more mature, it blooms (rarely) large night-blooming white flowers and edible orange fruits with white flesh that look similar to an apple. Flowers only open at night however, and live for less than 24 hours before closing..

Environment

This plant best grows in porous soil, and required good drainage. A sunlight friendly plant, this requires ample of bright light and airflow. Watering is required when the soil becomes dry to touch.

Landscape Uses

This is a beautiful specimen cactus for a large cactus or succulent garden. It can make an interesting plant for a large container and is a nice centerpiece for a warm, sunny courtyard. The plant does have a few spines so care should be taken in its location.
